The story of the Hot Cross Buns
Today, you might have the opportunity to enjoy a hot cross bun. If you do, remember what it is representing. The white cross in the middle of the bun stands for the cross where Jesus was crucified on Good Friday. The bun's round figure symbolizes the rock which was rolled away from the tomb on Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead and was alive. In 1733, the use of the word hot cross buns was first documented, but it could have been about much earlier to the point of pre-dating Christianity.
Here is the ingredients needed to make Hot Cross Buns:
3/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon instant powdered milk
1/4 cup white sugar
3/8 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 egg white
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3/4 cup dried currants
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons milk
